Anti-government protests show no sign of abating in Venezuela. Young protesters have clashed with riot police in the capital Caracas. Protesters-- many of them hooded, threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at officers and clogged up streets in busy areas with makeshift barricades. In response, police used tear gas and riot vehicles to disperse the angry mob. The violent protests came shortly after a colorful rally by supporters of President Nicolas Maduro. The Latin American country has been the scene of almost daily demonstrations against violent crime, shortages of essential goods, and soaring inflation in the past few weeks. Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds more injured in protests launched by university students.

Span/Eng/Nat At a monument symbolising South America's struggle for freedom in Caracas, Venezuela, U-S President Bill Clinton preached the gospel of open trade on Monday but said more must be done to alleviate poverty. The U-S and Venezuela also signed agreements on drug trafficking and energy development. And Clinton wowed the crowds by using colloquial Spanish to say that Caracas is "cool". Apparently for security reasons, a tall screen encircled the courtyard of the National Pantheon in Caracas, blocking it from surrounding buildings and cutting off any breeze on a hot day. The crowd was in a buoyant mood as they awaited a visit by U-S President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The National Pantheon is the church-like burial place for South American liberation hero Simon Bolivar and many of Venezuela's founding fathers. Bolivar led the fight to end Spanish colonial rule in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama and Peru. Earlier in the day Clinton and President Rafael Caldera witnessed the signing of agreements to strengthen cooperation in energy development and combating drugs. The drug accord gives Venezuela more than 11 (m) million dollars in patrol boats and surveillance planes to spot smugglers. The United States and Venezuela also will establish a joint intelligence centre to share information and coordinate anti-drug operations. Venezuelan President Rafael Caldera said there was still a lot of work to be done. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "There remains to be found a satisfactory solution for certain national interests where there are different points of view for each country." SUPER CAPTION: Rafael Caldera, Venezuelan president Other agreements signed included one to pursue a treaty ensuring equal treatment under Venezuelan law of U-S companies that do business in Venezuela; to promote diverse, competitive energy markets; and to cooperate in science and technology. Last year Venezuela replaced Saudi Arabia as the top U-S oil supplier. Open trade is the central theme of Clinton's trip - as well as his campaign back home to win congressional approval for stronger "fast track" authority to negotiate foreign trade deals. The president said open markets hold the promise of more jobs and higher living standards. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And now we can become a stronghold for security and prosperity and an example to the world that market democracies can deliver for all our people." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President But he added that no nation, including the United States, has found "the perfect formula" for a prosperous free market economy that eliminates all poverty. Before flying to Brazil, Clinton and his wife, Hillary, accepted a symbolic key to the city of Caracas and laid a wreath of red, white and blue carnations at the tomb of Simon Bolivar. Clinton, the first visiting head of state invited to speak at the National Pantheon, delighted his audience when he returned the honour in their language. SOUNDBITE: (English/Spanish) "To the people of this city I thank you for the extraordinary welcome you have given to Hillary and me and to our entire delegation. Everything is cool in Caracas. Everything is cool in Venezuela." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S president While there have been some protests of Clinton's visit - other locals have been more welcoming. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I believe that President Clinton's visit is bringing a continuation of the hegemony over the Americas and its people." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I like the idea of them visiting us, they're more than welcome and it would be great if people could get together." Four kilogrammes of rice, 3kg of pasta, 2kg of corn flour, 2kg of black beans, 1kg of sugar, 1kg of lentils, 500g of powdered milk, one litre of cooking oil, six tins of tuna fish and two bottles of tomato sauce. The mother of two from the sprawling Venezuelan shanty town of Petare, on the hills above the capital Caracas, paid 10,000 Bolivars for the government-provided food parcel, equivalent to less than $2 at the unofficial but widely used exchange rate. In her local market, or in one of Petare’s threadbare shops, the basket of staples would have cost up to 20 times as much. “These boxes have been a salvation for us,” says Ms Marcano, who began receiving the monthly parcels in March. “Last year was a disaster. We had to queue all night to buy food . . . and often there wasn’t anything to buy.” Yet with such a huge difference between the market price for the goods and the price paid — and an even bigger gap between the official and the black-market dollar exchange rates in Venezuela — the potential for arbitrage, profiteering and corruption in the state-run programme is high Please use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. The maseca flour makes great tortillas but Ms Marcano says it makes awful arepas, the corn flour patties that are a staple of the Venezuelan diet. “We’re all going to have to learn to cook like Mexicans,” she says. “Try making an arepa with that flour and it just falls apart in your hands.” Across the hillside in another part of Petare, Yira Figueroa, a government supporter who organises the distribution of the food boxes in her local area, describes the packages as “a blessing” that have helped stamp out profiteering and slash queues outside supermarkets With the economy in freefall, Venezuelans face nationwide shortages of food at runaway inflation prices, and children are suffering the most: severe malnutrition among kids is rising at an alarming rate. His words came at a meeting of Petrocaribe officials. Ramirez added that a global price of $100 (€79.69) per barrel of crude oil would be a "fair" price. A barrel is currently at $76.59 (€61.04). Petrocaribe is an alliance between Venezuela and several Caribbean nations to purchase oil at preferential prices. Launched in 2005, the organisation agreed in 2013 to promote broader economic cooperation in partnership with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA). In Venezuela, students lead the way as protestors vent their grievances against the country's socialist government. Then in Florida, a trial with echoes of the Trayvon Martin case once again raises thorny questions of race and self-defense in the United States. And the Little Prince may be associated with France but the character was born in New York, where we'll be profiling a new exhibition in his honour. 02/19/2014 INSIDE THE AMERICAS All the latest news from North and South America. A crypto-solution to fight against inflation. Venezuela plans to create a cryptocurrency, backed by the country's natural resources. This digital currency will be called ‘El Petro’, it will be controlled by the state and provided with natural reserves, such as gold, gas, diamonds and oil. Due to the high inflation of the national currency, digital money in Venezuela is already very popular. Nicholas Maduro, the president of the country said: "The creation of El Petro, will strengthen the monetary sovereignty of the country, overcome the financial blockade and will contribute to the economic and financial development of the country." Anti-government protests show no sign of abating in Venezuela.

President Nicolas Maduro greeted new Chinese Ambassador Zhao Bentang as “an old friend of Venezuela,” while receiving his credentials Thursday in Caracas. Maduro said that he welcomed the envoy exactly one year after Chinese President Xi Jinping paid his state visit to Caracas in July 2014, when both sides agreed to upgrade the bilateral ties to comprehensive strategic partnership. During the ceremony, Maduro and Zhao stressed the importance of deepening the bilateral cooperation, which was embodied in over 445 agreements in the fields of energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, education and so on. A week ago, during her routine meeting with Zhao, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez thanked China for sending an ambassador “who has handled its relations with Latin America,” noting the very importance that China has attached to the bilateral ties. Zhao once served as the Deputy Director of the Latin American Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of China, almost knowing the region at hand.
